New Ice Inc. to Develop, Market Compostable Food Packaging
New company’s products will target mainstream and organic produce and meat packagers…
DURANGO, Colo. – Oct. 2, 2007 – A new company, New Ice Inc., dedicated to the development, production and marketing of compostable food packaging, was unveiled today. The company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Instone Group, has been operating in stealth mode for a few years and is months away from introducing a new class of biodegradable food and beverage containers that are compostable.
Targeted to packagers of produce, meats and poultry that want to minimize the environmental impact of the packaging that they use, New Ice is taking a new approach to compostable food packaging.
The company has applied for process patents covering a unique potato starch formulation that replaces environmentally harmful plastic and Styrofoam food container products. The products are being designed to conform to ASTM* 6400 standards for compostable materials. New Ice is building its first manufacturing line in Durango and is currently testing pre-production products.
Commented Giles Instone, New Ice founder, “We have spent the last six years researching and developing a new class of products that will revolutionize the entire life cycle for compostable food containers. We’ve conceived an approach using a new process that will give food packagers an opportunity to be environmentally responsible, while protecting the quality of the food products that they sell.
“Although product availability is still a few months off, we want to introduce ourselves to the market to make food packagers, supermarket buyers and food service providers aware that a new alternative packing option is on the horizon.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New Ice Inc. Receives U.S. and European Patents
Covering Compostable Formulation
Also granted patents in several other countries…
DURANGO, Colo. – Nov. 6, 2007 – New Ice Inc., a company dedicated to the development, production and marketing of compostable food packaging, today announced that it has been granted patents in the United States and Europe that cover the manufacturing of a new class of compostable containers.
U.S. Patent Nos. 6,878,199 and 7,083,673, and European Union Patent No. 1327663 disclose methods for manufacturing biodegradable or compostable containers. The process covered by the patents provides an improved method and materials for forming moldable biodegradable containers that can hold food products in dry, damp or wet conditions.
Corresponding patents have been granted in a number of Eastern European and Asian countries, including Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and Taiwan. Additional patents are expected to be granted in other countries during 2008.
Commented Giles Instone, New Ice founder, “We came up with the concept about six years ago and have spent the intervening time developing and testing the formulation and investing in the concept. Everything is coming together now. We have patent protection in the U.S. and Europe and several other jurisdictions and we expect to soon market a number of products that are functional, cost-effective and truly compostable. Early interest from potential customers and partners is encouraging.”
New Approach to Food Packaging
The company initially will be providing products to packagers of fruit and vegetables to be followed by meats and poultry. The products, based on the patents, will use potato starch, which is plentiful, inexpensive and renewable. Starch is also readily biodegradable and does not persist in the environment for a significant period after disposal.
The New Ice product line, available in a few months, will conform to ASTM* D6400 and other international standards for compostable materials and will be able to replace environmentally harmful plastic and Styrofoam food container products. The company is running a pre-production manufacturing line in Durango where it is testing products for prospective customers.
